Doulas

A Doula is a labor coach, or nonmedical person who assists a woman before, during, or after childbirth, as well as her partner and/or family by providing information, physical assistance, and emotional support. The provision of continuous support during labor by doulas (as well as nurses, family, or friends) is associated with improved maternal and fetal health and a variety of other benefits. A variety of organizations offer certification and training to doulas, though there is no oversight to their practice and the title can be used by anyone. In contrast to the goal of medical professionals (a safe childbirth), the goal of a doula is to ensure the mother feels safe and confident before, during, and after delivery. (Source: Wikipedia)

As midwives, we work well with doulas. We offer many of the support options that a doula does, but a doula will be more available to you physically, as we often have other responsibilities, and may have more than one patient in labor simultaneously. A doula will also come to your home during your labor and help you labor at home before you're ready to come into the hospital, which we are not able to do.

Below is a list of doulas we have worked with or come recommended to us. We do not recommend any specific doula or group of doulas. To find a doula that will work best with you, it is best for you to interview a few and see which you get along best with personality-wise, as that will play a big role during labor.
